Delft, October 2024 – Circmar, the company behind the innovative reusable packaging solutions CIRCpall and CIRCbox, has chosen Bexter, developers of TrackOnline as its software partner to support their circular pooling system. By implementing the SaaS solution TrackOnline, Circmar is taking a significant step towards reducing waste and improving efficiency in the seafood supply chain, aligning with its mission to make the industry more sustainable.

The seafood industry traditionally relies on single-use Styrofoam (made from extruded polystyrene) boxes, which are difficult to recycle and often end up as waste. Pallets are also widely used in the industry, but like the boxes, they are single-use. These wooden pallets are frequently discarded after one use due to contact with fish residues, water, and blood.

In Norway, Circmar’s home base, fish exports are steadily increasing, and it’s projected that by 2030, they will have doubled, and by 2050, tripled. This means millions of trips involving single-use pallets and boxes, which leave a significant environmental footprint.

Circmar introduces a groundbreaking circular and sustainable approach to packaging and transporting seafood with CIRCpall and CIRCbox. These reusable packaging solutions are made partial from 100% recycled marine waste. Additionally, the circular load carrier achieves an over 80% reduction in CO2 emissions during the life cycle compared to traditional packaging. They are robust and designed to reduce breakage, food waste and to fit 5-6 times more units per truck greatly improving transportation efficiency.

Furthermore, Circmar aligns with the forthcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which mandates that by 2030, over 40% of packaging in the EU/EEA must be reusable, increasing to more than 90% by 2040. By adopting Circmar’s reusable packaging solutions, companies not only reduce their environmental impact but also ensure compliance with upcoming regulations

A reuse system as the foundation

A reuse system is essential to making this work. The reuse model operates as a service concept: Instead of buying, companies rent the necessary pallets and boxes, use them in their production process, and after delivery, Circmar collects, cleans, disinfects, and redistributes the packaging.

To effectively manage a circular system, reliable digitalisation and smart software are crucial. TrackOnline, with over 25 years of experience in reuse systems, has been selected as the pooling software to ensure this circular model runs smoothly.

TrackOnline plays a vital role in supporting the reuse system by providing real-time visibility into the locations of packaging and streamlining the process of handling transactions and service fees. With TrackOnline, Circmar can accurately track packaging balances and provide customers with full control over their valuable circular supply chain.

This collaboration between Circmar and Bexter’s TrackOnline marks a significant step toward a more sustainable future for the seafood industry. Together, they aim to transform the industry into a circular model where reuse and efficiency are at the core.

“At TrackOnline, we lead the transition to a circular economy through our Returnable Item Platform. I am proud to contribute to waste reduction in the seafood industry. Circmar has developed a groundbreaking solution by the possibility of replacing traditional Styrofoam  fish boxes- over 5 million of which are thrown away annually in Norway alone- with the reusable CIRCbox and the CIRCpall as a reusable pallet, managed in TrackOnline they offer a complete solution. Together, we are taking a key step towards a circular economy, where technology and innovation drive the shift from single-use to reusable systems. This collaboration brings us closer to a sustainable future for the entire industry.” — Anna Valkenburg, Channel Manager at Bexter.

“With Circmar’s reusable packaging solutions, we create a truly circular system that streamlines the entire value chain. Our service model, powered by TrackOnline’s technology and additional intelligent IoT/data platform, ensures efficient delivery, return logistics, and full control over tracking and monitoring, helping our customers operate more sustainably. After a successful pilot in recent months with CIRCpall, we are pleased to extend our collaboration with TrackOnline for the long term. In October, we will launch CIRCbox pilot phase together with seafood customers, further expanding our circular approach to packaging in the seafood industry.” — Lars Schnell, CTO at Circmar.
